The Media Polls Discover White Recession Wives

Three weeks ago, after reviewing the Battleground poll, I introduced the concept of the white recession wife (WRW) – white married women who are very worried about the threats the Great Recession and massive government borrowing pose to their families and are by far the most enthusiastic voters in the electorate. At that time, WRWs massively disapproved of President Barack Obama’s job performance by a 60% to 37% margin with only 1% undecided and planned to take this disapproval out on the president at the polls, supporting GOP challenger Mitt Romney 57% to 39%. The “Dinner Table” ad poignantly showed the situation married women find themselves in the Obama depression:

This week, white recession wives had their coming out party in polite media polling society.

This morning, USA Today’s headline shouted: “Swing States poll: Women push Romney into lead” The USA Today/Gallup poll of likely voters found that Romney has come from behind to take a 50% to 46% lead in swing states and that surge is largely driven by women Gallup has nicknamed “blue collar waitress moms.” Women in general are more likely than men to describe themselves as extremely enthusiastic (41% to 35%), married women more enthusiastic than unmarried women, and women who support Romney much more likely to be extremely enthusiastic than those who support Obama (46% to 38%).

The Battleground poll cross tabs continue to find that WRW enthusiasm is stratospheric, with 82% saying they are extremely likely to vote (although their husbands have now passed them as the most enthusiastic group at 84%). WRW support for Romney has expanded marginally since he first presidential debate to 60% to 38% over Obama (joining their husbands’ level of support at 61% to 35%). Finally, WRW make up 14% of Independents and are a large part of the reason Independents are supporting Romney 49% to 41% over Obama.

The other media polls without detailed cross tabs are showing that women’s support for Barack Obama has collapsed from its 56% to 43% level in the 2008 election to 48% to 46% in the Monmouth University poll and 49% to 45% in the IBD/TIPP poll.

Obama lost white and increasingly hispanic men to Romney some time ago and cannot afford to lose any of his 2008 advantage among women. However, Democrat strategists Stan Greenberg and Page Gardner are now essentially conceding married women to Romney and are desperately offering ideas on how to turn out the far less motivated group of single and divorced women by offering programs to turn them into government dependents. Can you possibly get any more disrespectful to women than to argue that they can’t make it without a man or the government?

Democrat flailing aside, this does indeed appear to be the year of the white recession wife.
